It is with much enthusiasm and excitement that Carter and Company of Boston participates in the decoration and

refurbishment of the Endicott Mansion for the 2013 Designer’s Holiday Show House.

It is especially meaningful and gratifying to Principal Michael Carter because the show house will benefit the

preservation of the classical masterpiece, the Derby Summer House, which is sited within the grounds and gardens of Glen Magna Farms, and is the fitting symbol of the Danvers Historical Society. “When I was in my early twenties I started keeping a file of magazine clippings of all sorts of images that inspired me: rooms, colors, fabrics, etc. I loved history, architecture and all things classically inspired. And in that early file there was a picture of a beautiful classical folly, a two-story tea house, and all I knew was that it was somewhere near Salem and that it was absolutely

sublime”. He eventually came to know that it was designed by the legendary architect and carver Samuel McIntire, and the clipping is still in his “special file” to this day.

FIRST & SECOND FLOOR FOYER

This magnificent, sweeping, almost breathtaking, two story foyer anchors the main floors of the Mansion. The Foyer was the first room to greet the Endicott and Chamberlain guests when they came through the portico, up the small steps to the first floor and gazed ahead, through the Samuel Mclntire carved doorway framing the Drawing Room, out to the Gazebo that, in turn, framed the statue of Lysithia at the end of Lover’s Lane.

One of the finest examples of Mclntire’s work, the door frame displays his trademark wheat sheaves and basket of

flowers, and, on the Drawing Room side, the Federal Eagle. It was taken from Grandfather Peabody’s home in Salem.

As the guests turned around, they would see, for the first time, the grand, curved staircase, framing the classic Palladian window. One can only imagine the sight of the Endicott ladies and Mary Endicott Chamberlain descending these stairs in their dress gowns to greet their dinner guests
