Old Fashioned Garden

The Old Fashioned Garden on the south side of the house were designed and planted in 1814 and 1815 by George Huessler, noted Alsatian gardener. Huessler enclosed the gardens with buckthorn. He designed these gardens around a large tulip tree and central mound, with triple paths that led to the Peabody Gazebo. In the 1890s, Charles Eliot embellished the beds by introducing new annuals and perennials including geraniums, peonies, lilies, hostas and hollyhocks.
