The Lover's Walk
| The long walk south of the gazebo was originally
planted with a hawthorne hedge in 1817 as part of George Heussler’s
garden design. At the end of the long walk stood a statue of Lysthea,
a carved wooden statue copied from one at the Marquis of Waterford
estate in Ireland. As these hedges died out, they were replaced
with buckthorn on the east and arbor vitae on the west. Then, in
1932, the old buckthorn hedge on the east side died out and was
replaced with arbor vitae. In the early 1970s both arbor vitae
hedges were removed and replaced with the same as it stands today. |
